Dinosaur Valley Adventure Pt.1

So today we took a trip to the Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose. we had planned on going to the Creation Evidence Museum as well, but sadly-it's closed on Mondays :( But we had a great time hiking through the trails to find the dino tracks and picnicing and playing in the river- it was GREAT!!

The boys HAD to pose with the T-Rex!

Uncle Jason and Coleson examining the "brontosaurus"

Did you know that the "brontosaurus" isnt a real dinosaur? Back around 1820 there were these two excavators who were competing to try to discover the most new dinosaurs, they would even sabotage each other, blowing up their dig sites and stuff. Anyways, one guys got a little over eager ( or decietful, whatever- potato po-tah-to) and stuck the head of a different dinosaur on a skeleton he had already discovered and called it a new dino... tricky, tricky!

Mikey and I hangin' with the big dude

Me and all the little guys!

Coleson did not like this whole eat-sandwich-before-grapes-and-jello thing :)

Yup- love a good picnic!

After we ate the boys played on a playground set complete with plaster cliffs to climb

Ahhhhh- help me I'm falling......

The first dino track we found ( at site 1) we had to hike a good ways down but it was SO fun!
it's too bad we didnt realize until later how great the river felt, this would have been a great place for wading.

Another one, a litle hard to see

It was so beautiful, there were a few people swimming, i wish we had known how great it was!

Hiking back to find another track site

Here we came to a beautiful place to cross the river. i would have been to chicken to cross, but Jay wanted us to go for it!

Surveying the river

Yup- we're good to go- let's cross~

Dinosaur Valley Adventure

Here's the second batch!!!

Getting the boys across the river- brave Jason!!

Coleson was having SO much fun!

One of the best tracks we found

Jason had a good time too :)

Coleson just loved looking at the little fish!

Looking for shells...

Caleb found a real fossil!!!

We ended the trip with a stop at Dinosaur world!

To sacrifice a....Cat?!

I went to my friend Christina's blog and was very impressed by how she shares her thoughts and flaws and puts it all out there. i was also very amused by an anecdote she posted about her daughter ( see here ) And it reminded me of a conversation I had with Mikey a few months ago that I had thought was so funny that i actually wrote it down intending to blog about it on Myspace. but I never got around to it so here it is and if you enjoy it...well, thank Christina!

October 2007- Today during Bible in homeschool Mikey asked me why Jesus is called the Lamb of God. Pretty good question, I thought, and so launched in to an explanation ( as far as I understand it anyways)
I explained how in Bible times, like during the lifetime of Abraham, Jesus hadn't yet died on the Cross for our sins, so people had to sacrifice animals to atone for their sins. The kind of animal used in the sacrifice would sometimes correspond to the sin. For instance a dove or other bird might be sacrificed for a lesser sin while a more "badder" sin might require a goat, bull or even a lamb. ( according to my incomplete understanding. I suppose i could be wrong, but this is how i have understood it anyway :) )
The person who sinned would take the animal to the priest and the priest would kill the animal and the blood of the animal would fall on the alter and they would be forgiven ( or something like that)
I went on to explain that Jesus was perfect and sinless and that when he died on the Cross for us, and shed His blood for us he became the sacrifice. He took the place of the animals who were sacrificed and His blood covered the sin of anyone who would believe in Him and call on Him. So that is one reason why He is called The Lamb of God.
Now, this is all pretty complex for a (then) six year old and so I did what i always do when we cover something complicated in school- I had him repeat it back to me like he is teaching me so I know if he understood and retained the information...and this is what i got back:
"Ok, so, um..A long time ago back when Abraham Lincoln was the President we used to have to sacrifice animals ..."
I stopped him, trying to hold back my laughter and explained that Abraham Lincoln and Abraham in the bible were two different people that lived during very different times...
So we got past that and I asked him to continue and he gave me his take on what i had explained...
He told me how what kind of animal needed to be sacrificed sometimes depended on what kind of sin was commited
"So, if you told a lie or something like that, then, ummm... you might have to sacrifice, like a dove or something like that. But if you got on orange in school (ok, last year he was in public school and the discipline method was pulling cards, green, yellow, orange, and then red was for big big trouble) then I think you'd hafta sacrifice, like a lamb...cuz that's real bad and lambs are all cute and fluffy and white. It's Ok to kill a goat though, cuz it has the horns and i don't like goats, on account a the horns....
Now if you got on red though, you might hafta sacrifice a cat, and they're real nice and fluffy so that would be sad."

I had to dismiss school early and go put my head under a pillow and laugh. Seriously. LOL
